Team Story – Harry Aldersley

There’s a really strong sense of teamwork. Even as an Apprentice, I feel valued and supported.

Q. Can you introduce yourself and tell us about your current role at Butcher & Barlow

A. I’m Harry Aldersley, a Solicitor Apprentice currently working in the Family Law Team at the Firm’s Bramhall office.

Q. How long have you been with Butcher & Barlow and what does a typical day look like for you?

A. It’s been about five or six months now, and a typical day for me starts with checking and responding to emails to stay on top of any updates or urgent matters. I then move on to the task I have been given or choose another from the file. These tasks often include reviewing medical records, police disclosures, and parenting assessments. I go through the information, making detailed file notes and highlighting key points that are relevant to the case.

Q. You’re a Solicitor Apprentice, what’s your experience like as compared to the traditional university route do you think?

A. You get real-life experience rather than just theory, which helps everything make much more sense. I really like learning on the job. Plus, earning while learning means no student debt, which is a big advantage.

Q. How does the apprenticeship work?

A. I work in the office four days a week and have a university day every Tuesday, which is online. My apprenticeship lasts two years as a Paralegal, and then I’ll move on to the Solicitor course. So, in total it will be six years until I’m qualified.

Q. And how are you finding it so far?

A. I’m really enjoying it. I’m currently in the Family Law Team and it is incredibly interesting. One of the highlights so far was spending a week in court, taking notes on a case I had been working on. It was great to see how it all played out in real life.

Q. Do you see yourself specialising in Family Law, or are you undecided yet?

A. At the moment, I’m keeping an open mind and getting experience in different departments. But I do enjoy Family Law, so it’s definitely a possibility for the future.

Q. What initially drew you to law as a career?

A. Well, I have family who work in law so that played a part I think, but I studied Law at A-Level and found it really interesting, particularly contract law. But working in a law firm is very different from studying it in a classroom. The hands-on experience has given me a much better understanding of the profession.

Q. Have you faced any challenges or surprises so far?

A. One of the biggest surprises was being responsible for an online hearing with a client on my own. It was a great learning experience. Butcher & Barlow really trusts and supports its Apprentices and Trainees. They’ll push you but always within your capabilities, and that’s such a great way to learn.

Q. Do you feel supported in your role?

A. Absolutely. My supervisor, Nicola, has been a great mentor. Even though she’s often in court, she checks in regularly and supports me with my work. The rest of the Family Law Team is also really helpful and always on hand – I can ask for advice or guidance when needed and you’re never made to feel like they don’t have time for you.

Q. What do you like to do outside of work?

A. I’m a huge football fan, mainly watching rather than playing these days. I support Manchester United for my sins. I also enjoy going to the gym and running.

Q. How do you find the work environment at Butcher & Barlow?

A. There’s a really strong sense of teamwork. Even as an Apprentice, I feel valued and supported. There’s also a great culture here – things like payday lunches, birthday leave, and Christmas parties are nice perks.

Q. What are your long-term career goals?

A. Right now, my focus is on qualifying and getting as much experience as possible across different departments. Once I’ve had a chance to work in more areas of law, I’ll decide where I want to specialise.

Q. What advice would you give to someone considering a Solicitor Apprenticeship?

A. If you like the idea of gaining hands-on experience while studying and avoiding student debt, it’s a great route. It gives you a head start in the profession and helps you build confidence early on.

My three words to describe Butcher & Barlow are: homely, supportive and inspiring.
